Jan Hus: The Brave Voice of Prague

Not long after John Wycliffe’s ideas began to spread, a brilliant man named Jan Hus lived in the city of Prague. Jan was a popular preacher at a massive church called the Bethlehem Chapel. Unlike most churches at the time that only held services in Latin, Jan did something radical: he preached in the everyday language of the local people! He wanted everyone, from the poorest workers to the wealthiest merchants, to clearly understand the teachings of the Bible for themselves.

Jan deeply believed that the Bible should be the ultimate guide for a person’s life, rather than the rules of corrupt leaders. He boldly spoke out against church officials who were demanding money from the poor in exchange for forgiveness. Because of his immense popularity and his unyielding commitment to the truth, the authorities began to see him as a major threat. They ordered him to stop preaching, but Jan refused, believing that he had to answer to his conscience first.

Eventually, Jan was invited to a massive meeting called the Council of Constance. He was promised a safe journey and protection so he could explain his beliefs in person. Tragically, it was a trap. As soon as he arrived, he was arrested and thrown into a freezing, dark dungeon. The leaders demanded that he take back everything he had taught. Even while facing the ultimate consequence, Jan Hus stood firm. He bravely stated that he would rather give up his life than tell a lie. His incredible courage lit a fire of faith that would eventually help spark the great Reformation a century later!
