John Wycliffe

John Wycliffe lived a long time ago in England, hundreds of years before the printing press was even invented. He was a brilliant professor at Oxford University who loved reading the Bible. Back then, the Bible was only written in Latin, a language that only highly educated scholars and powerful church leaders could understand. Wycliffe looked around and realized this was not fair. He believed that the words of Scripture were meant for absolutely everyone, not just the wealthy or the elite.

To fix this problem, John Wycliffe decided to do something incredibly brave. He began translating the Bible from Latin into English so that regular people could finally read it for themselves! Because there were no printing presses, every single copy had to be carefully written out by hand. He also trained a group of traveling preachers known as the Lollards. These men wore simple clothes, carried walking sticks, and walked from village to village reading the new English Bible to anyone who would listen.

The powerful leaders of his time were very angry with him because they wanted to keep all the knowledge and power to themselves. They tried everything they could to stop him, but Wycliffe refused to back down. He believed the truth was too important to hide. Today, he is remembered as the Morning Star of the Reformation because his brave work brought the very first light of truth into a dark time, paving the way for so many other brave men and women who came after him.
